Our Favorite Things 2012

The Amazing Lily Pad is, by far, our best seller of the year.  Available in four sizes, it is a self-sealing silicone lid.  It can be used in the oven, micowave (yes, really) dishwasher and freezer.  That just about covers it.

Christine loves this baker.  This is meant for showing off!  Wouldn't your lasagne or favorite casserole want to be here?  Available in a variety of colors and sizes.  Made by BIA so is safe  in oven, microwave, dishwasher and freezer.  Affordably priced - the 3 quart size is $27.50 Cook with Style!

These little bowls are as adorable as they seem.  At $23 for a set of six, they have brought smiles to many new owners.

Popovers

"Foolproof Popovers"

1 cup milk
1 cup flour
2 eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
6 cold greased cups in popover pan

Put all ingredients in mixing bowl.  Stir with a spoon until what's dry is moist.  Disregard lumps.  Pour into cold greased popover pan, filling half full.  Place in cold oven.  Set the oven for 450 degrees and the time for 30 minutes.  Don't peek.  When the bell rings, serve your glorious popovers to startled guests.

Yield:  6
Bake:  30 minutes at 450 degrees

A nod from Cook's Illustrated

Our favorite (and only) Pressure Cooker received the coveted, "Highly Recommended" review in their latest issue.  Jan/Feb 2012
An excerpt from the article titled, "Why you Should Buy a Pressure Cooker"
You don't have to tell a soul that your savory, fork-tender pot roast, pulled pork, short ribs, or stew cooked in record time - and most of that time was hands-off.  Dried beans are creamy and tender...Risotteneeds just 6 minutes under pressre to reach the perfect consistency.

Brunch is Best!

Brunch is an easy, fun, and typically less stressful entertainment opportunity for friends and family. Room temperature foods, small bites, and family style or buffet service all come together for a low stress mid-day visit. Many dishes made ahead of time and simply pulled out of the fridge at service time - champagne corks popped and poured. Juice or fun white wine blends with grapes like viognier, semillon blanc, and riesling and dark rich coffee. We started serving brunches instead of dinners for special occasions when the family was visiting - it let us all get together and navigate snowy roads in daytime, spend a few hours together, then make it home in the light of day and left the rest of the day free for all of those important day-off activities; like napping.

Brunch tables beg creativity and fun. Flowers! mix-matched champagne glasses, wine goblets, colorful table linens, foods from Italy, France, and Aunt Berdie's tamale pie all share the same space on the sideboard. Last night's pizza with a poached egg can become a new favorite (surprisingly delicious with a white Rhone blend.) The rules of engagement for Brunch are much more relaxed than for a dinner party. Conversations and bold flavors rule. Ties are certainly optional.

As you plan your next social/kitchen event - consider the very civilized approach of Brunch. Give your kitchen the chance to show off your whimsical side!

Pictured: Northwest Portland Pepperoni pizza leftovers with Basted Eggs: Use last night's pizza - trick is to get the crust crisp by heating it on top of stove in skillet - fry eggs in non-stick add a tsp. of water, top with a lid to steam finish the eggs. Serve over pizza with fresh cracked black pepper; chili flakes or sri racha to taste. Easy peasy!
